A 1.5 million-square-foot, 51-story building atop an eight-level underground parking deck on a full city block in Charlotte, NC. The Wachovia Office Tower required two of the strongest tower cranes made along with a self jacking concrete placing boom to complete the construction. A unitized curtain wall system adorns the exterior of the building while the office tower itself consists of a concrete tube frame construction with pre-cast double-tee infill between core and perimeter. The top five levels of the building are structural steel.
The coordination of hoisting to support an overall site footprint of 130,000 square feet was a challenge in addition to site logistics in a downtown location. With multiple pieces of the project going on simultaneously, coordination of cranes, materials supply and other deliveries were a challenge. The Wachovia Office Tower, which is seeking LEED Gold Certification.
