Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the economic engine not just for Atlanta, but also for our state and the entire Southeastern United States. Hartsfield’s business revenue impact to the region is almost $17 billion annually. By the year 2015, this will reach more than $32 billion annually and the most recent economic impact study estimates that the Airport is responsible for almost 500,000 jobs within our region.
As the regional economy continues to grow, one of the major challenges has been to expand and modernize Hartsfield to meet the increasing demand for air travel. Therefore, to keep pace with this phenomenal and incredible growth, Hartsfield is in the third year of a 10-Year, $5.4 billion capital improvement project. It is the largest public works project in the history of the state of Georgia. This Program will address the challenges we face entering a new millennium and will take Hartsfield well into the 21st Century.
This plan will include:
Runway 10/28 (Fifth Runway) and Other Airfield Projects In order to meet the increased demand for air travel and reduce current delays, the need to build the new 9,000 foot Fifth Runway (Runway 10/28) is paramount.
East International Terminal (EIT) Hartsfield accommodated more than 5.7 million international passengers in 2002 and is expected to transport more than 14 million international passengers by 2015. This increase in international passenger traffic has required airport planners to expand facilities beyond Concourse "E".
Consolidated Rental Agency Complex (CONRAC) Due to the increasing demands upon the existing on-airport car rental facilities, the need for a consolidated rental car structure has become necessary. The new Consolidated Rental Agency Complex will be located south of Camp Creek Parkway and west of Interstate 85.
Central Passenger Terminal Complex (CPTC) The Central Passenger Terminal Complex will be enhanced to accommodate the rising number of travelers passing through Hartsfield. To enhance passenger service, improvements will include upgrades to curbside services, security checkpoints, ticket counters, interior finishes, concessions, baggage, make-up facilities, baggage claim areas, vertical transportation, moving sidewalks and expansion of existing concourses. Further modification plans include taxiway enhancements as well as the expansion of Air Cargo and Aircraft Maintenance facilities.
