BRONX CRIMINAL COURT COMPLEX

Dormitory Authority State of New York

Location: Bronx, New York
Completed: November 2005
Budget: $280,000,000
Square Footage: 733,000 SF
Architect: Raphael Vignoli Architects

The new 733,000 square foot Bronx Criminal Court Complex was built on a three-block site. The project goal was to integrate the project within the existing community consisting of low and mid-rise residential buildings, elementary and high school facilities, and retail and commercial activity. This was achieved by arranging the building along the perimeter of the site, to create an open civic space within the block that acts as a transition between the Court Complex and its neighbors.

The linear layout of the building wraps around a large central open space, which contributes to the urban landscape of the neighborhood. In the middle of the complex, a freestanding low volume space serves as the Jury Assembly Hall, the symbolic and spatial center for the complex. Inside the Court Complex, public functions are located adjacent to the central open space, which provides a visual reference point to orientate visitors.
