WOODRUFF ARTS CENTER AND HIGH MUSEUM EXPANSION

Woodruff Arts Center Council

Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Completed: August 2005
Budget: $96,000,000
Square Footage : 177,000 SF
Architect: Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Comprised of the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta College of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the High Museum of Art, and the 14th Street Playhouse, the Woodruff Arts Center is ranked among the top four Arts Centers in the nation. The High's new facilities, which encompass 177,000 SF, provides additional gallery space for the Museum's expansive permanent collection, enlarged special exhibition space, and improved visitor amenities including a retail shop and coffee bar.

Piano's design for the expansion of the High encompasses three new buildings—a main pavilion, a special collections building, and an administrative office building. A glass-enclosed bridge links the main pavilion to the Museum's Meier–designed building at the lobby level and on the top floor. Top-floor galleries in these two buildings feature controlled natural light, and houses part of the Museum's permanent collection, currently numbering more than 10,000 works. Flexible space on the main pavilion's second floor is used for special exhibitions.
