BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE

Birmingham Historical Preservation Society

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Completed: 1992
Budget: $7,800,000
Square Footage : 64,000 SF
Architect: R.L. Brown & Associates

Russell was proud to be a part of the Design/Build Team on this landmark museum in Birmingham, AL. The museum is noted for the long, gently climbing stairs leading to its distinct standing-seam dome roof. The clever design of the entrance walkway leads visitors on a long, slow climb to reach their destination, symbolic of the Civil Rights struggle in this country and around the world. The institute consists of two-stories and 64,000 sf of museum/exhibit hall space with a circular community meeting hall. The exterior is brick veneer with architectural pre-cast and spandrel panels.
