We build
Atlanta, Georgia
H.J. Russell & Company, in association with Legends Project Development, served as Program Manager for the new Emory Sports Medicine Complex, the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks’ player development and practice facility.
As Program Manager, Russell represented the Hawks organization in overseeing the design, construction, and initial operation start-up of the complex. This included: preparing and maintaining development schedule and budget; procuring and assisting the Hawks in the selection of the architect, construction manager and other consultants; confirming all permits and authorizations are approved; monitoring project teams’ performance; collaborating with all involved stakeholders; and ensuring, overall, the Player Development & Practice Facility is of excellent quality, while being at or below budget and completed in time required by our client.
The project, a joint development between the Hawks and Emory Healthcare, Inc., is a two-story, 90,000-square-foot building dedicated to the Hawks’ players, coaches, owners and other staff, as well as a training and sports medicine facility for Emory Healthcare, Inc. The complex features practice courts along with a fully dedicated recovery space that will include cryotherapy, sensory deprivation tanks, in-ground hydrotherapy, physical therapy, and sport performance areas for the Hawks and Emory.
About Sustainability
Sustainability was always a main goal for the Emory Sports Medicine Complex project. There were many aspects to the sustainability of this project, including being built on a brownfield redevelopment site. Other aspects include water efficiency and reduction, optimizing energy performance, construction waste management, utilizing regional materials, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, low emitting materials and lighting design just to name a few.
The site included an innovative stormwater management retention system designed and fabricated to retain water under the players’ parking area. This system design included a series of piping with interconnected chambers to allow slow discharge of water into the existing county storm system.
The Emory Sports Medicine Complex achieved LEED certification with the U.S. Green Building Council. For the project, Russell won three 2018 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) South Atlantic Chapter Project Achievement Awards for the Constructed Under $50M, Program Management, and Sustainability categories.
