H. J. Russell & Company, in joint venture with C.D. Moody Construction Company and Holder Construction Company, provided construction management at-risk services for the development of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta.
The project included the construction of a three-level, LEED Gold-certified cultural institution featuring complex architectural geometry and high-performance building systems. Scope elements included coordination and installation of a high-performance exterior wall assembly, advanced environmental control systems, a vegetated roof, and energy-efficient building components designed to support long-term sustainability and occupant comfort.
Interior spaces were constructed to support a wide range of programmatic uses, including immersive exhibit galleries, interactive installations, an event space, a broadcast studio, and a retail store. The team managed the build-out of specialized gallery environments designed to accommodate sensitive collections, multimedia displays, and visitor engagement technologies.
The building’s curved façade, symbolizing interlocking arms that cradle the central space, required precise coordination across trades to achieve the architect’s design intent. Russell and its joint venture partners worked closely with stakeholders to ensure quality execution, schedule control, and seamless integration of architectural, structural, and mechanical systems.
The result is a nationally significant civic and cultural destination that tells the story of civil and human rights across three interconnected levels, honoring history while engaging visitors through modern, immersive experiences.
